In honor of Women’s History Month, I began to highlight some Feisty Femmes on my Instagram, who’ve inspired me in some aspect of my life. On top of that I decided to post it every Wednesday for #WCW, because I’m definitely crushing, but on another level. I’m taking it further than beauty, I’m crushing on intelligence, drive, ambition, hustle, and success (things feisty femmes truly find attractive).
For my first post I highlight the Queen of Media, Oprah. Again, she inspired the dream, before I knew it was THE DREAM. THE GOAL. THE ONLY OPTION.
But, this week I’m honoring a woman who recently became an influence, Sophia Amoruso, Founder and CEO of Nasty Gal.
I was familiar with Nasty Gal but I never checked to see who created it — it’s a site I’ve visited, but not enough to do that type of research.
So why am I honoring her? Keep reading…
As I was plotting on what book to steal from my friends library, I noticed a pink hard-cover book, #GIRLBOSS. Pink. Girl. Boss. I was sold, that was definitely me summed up on a cover.
I took the book home and I was hooked. I felt inspired by each page, not just “oh I have an ill ass idea.” It was more of, “I’m going to execute this idea I have,” and I am.
What inspired me the most was Sophia’s story and her advice. She was a petty thief, hitchhiker, unemployed (most times), a dumpster-diver, she had OCD, she was unique, and determined.
Sophia started her career off of selling vintage clothes on eBay, now she has one of the fastest growing businesses — Nasty Gal, a $100 million plus company– and in #GIRLBOSS she walks us through it with a few do’s and don’ts and here are some that stuck:
– Money looks better in the bank than on your feet: “When your time spent making money is significantly greater than your time spent spending money, you will be amazed at how much you can save without even real thinking about it.” – Sophia Amoruso
– Don’t make talking about money an uncomfortable situation.
– Treat your thoughts like your dollar bills: don’t waste em’
– Don’t do things for the gain, do it for the love.
– Cover letters can be your friend,
and the list goes on and on and on, you’ll just have to read the book for yourself.
I believe Sophia and I are similar and when you can relate to someone it’s easier to take advice from them, because you can understand them or you feel like you’ve been there. That’s how it was for me.
#GIRLBOSS to Sophia is what Feisty Femme represents to me. A #GIRLBOSS is in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it. I’d say a Feisty Femme is the same thing, however, I’d take it a bit further than that. Feisty Femmes are ladies who seek and adventurous lifestyle, because to act on want you want is scary sometimes, but thrilling, it’s for the fiery girls that won’t let society or anyone break them down or tear them away from their dreams and that’s what Sophia Amoruso did.
So on this Wednesday I honor you #GIRLBOSS and Feisty Femme for Women’s History Month.
Keep making history. Keep bossin’ and keep it feisty.
